Protocol

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is an evidence-based listening therapy designed to increase feelings of calm and safety, reduce sound sensitivities, support mental focus and clear thinking, and help you connect more genuinely with others.

The SSP acts as a non-invasive, acoustic vagal nerve stimulator, helping to re-tune the nervous system to better support connection, collaboration and resilience.

The SSP involves listening to specially filtered music through over-the-ear headphones alongside a provider, in-person or remotely. The SSP has demonstrated benefits for individuals with trauma, anxiety, sensory processing differences and more.

SSP experience

What to expect from the SSP experience

The SSP involves 5-hours of specially-filtered music to train the neural network associated with listening to focus on the frequency range of the human voice. As you learn to focus on the sound frequencies through the SSP program, the vagus nerve becomes stimulated and the state of feeling more safe and calm becomes accessible.

Over the course of 10 sessions, we will incorporate listening with somatic exercises and autonomic check-ins to aid your nervous system in finding safety and regulation during and beyond the program.

The SSP involves a complete assessment prior to the first listening session. The complete protocol is divided into 10 sessions that will be spread out over a series of time determined by how your nervous system responds.

In addition to the SSP Core listening program we will use together, as an active client, you will receive access to the SSP Connect Program, which is a listening protocol of classical music designed to increase feelings of safety and relaxation between sessions. Emotional regulation exercises and tools will also be provided for your individual use. Email communication with me is highly encouraged throughout the program to track changes and build awareness as you move through the experience.
